Fifteen years training and assessing operators on mobile plant at Glencore Murrin Murrin. Large CAT wheel loaders are my specialty. Still there, and looking for the next one.

I train to a fixed routine. Same sequence, same standard, every operator, whether they walked on this morning or have been on the fleet a decade. That is the whole trick — competency that holds across crews, shifts and swings, and a record that says the same thing the operator does.

Ground conditions are where I spend my attention: soft and sandy floors, traction, bogging, tyre damage, floor and windrow standards. Most of what goes wrong on a loader starts underneath it.

Before mining I worked security. The hazard sense came from there, not from a classroom.
